Short List for Social Media Management
Business Advantage
Here's a Short List of Social Media Notes

  • Know who your audience is.  Write to address their needs.
  • Keep it focused. Don't go down bunny trails or throw in random trivia. Save it for another entry.
  • Don't make any promises you can't keep.
  • Respond in a timely manner to comments and questions.
  • The easiest way to start using social media is to try managing a facebook page. If you can't handle it, don't try the rest.
  • The "rest" is blogs, Twitter, Youtube, LinkedIn and a host of other wanna-be's.
  • If a tree falls in a forest... No one will know you have this blog, etc. unless you advertise it online, cross-link, business cards, etc.
  • Once it's there you must keep it going or it will look like you've lost interest or gone out of business.
  • Make it quantifiable to judge how well your efforts are working - read status reports - offer discounts and promos to online viewers.

Is Blogging Worth The Time?
Business Advantage
You're busy - you've got a company to run. Who has time to sit down and write little essays on a regular basis? What is there to say? Just about every website has a blog these days, though. Is it that important to keep up with the competition?

What You Don't Need A Blog For
Your website pages are meant to advertise products and services, tell about your company and solicit sales responses. That's what competitors do, too. Competitors also have turned to Facebook, Twitter and other social networking systems to get the word out about their company and increase online presence. So isn't a blog redundant?  What can it possibly do that these venues can't?

Reaching Out In A Meaningful Way
Use your website for sales information and to announce news about your company and its products or services. Website = Advertising. The social networks are limited to a few short sentences - little more than a blurb, that can be shared from friend to friend and hopefully go 'viral.'   Social Net = Marketing.

However, blogs are the venue of choice for imparting knowledge on related subjects, putting forth general questions, mulling over outside news or regulations that may affect your industry, and asking for consumer opinions. Blog = Town Hall Meeting. It's the place for customers to learn about your expertise, and to develop a reader relationship with a foundation rooted in personality, not  sales pitches. Readers will come back often if the content is a) helpful and b) refreshed frequently with new information.

In an isolated medium like the Internet, in a modern culture that has become increasingly impersonal, blogging brings people together again in 'communities' of targeted interests. It is the 'warm, fuzzy feeling' that customers have been missing.

So Let Your Light Shine
Be who you are. Tell what you know. Share what you care about. Ask for the exchange of ideas. They are so enriching! Get to know your customers. As they get to know you better, they become more likely to be loyal clients.

Educate
Share your expertise about your industry.  Post interviews with authorities on related issues. Let people know about upcoming issues.

Increase Search Engine Ranking
Each time you post a page on your website, it adds to your ranking. Hmm, that's a good reason to take the time to write on a regular basis. Furthermore, as you post articles on items that are commonly queried, you get more Internet traffic. Too, others may cross-link, picking up your blog on a regular basis, and talking about it on their blogs.

So go for it. Try it out. Slow at first. Maybe ask some questions and see how your audience responds. Let me know how you do!

Organic Search Engine Optimization Tips by Phil Meek
How To's & Helpful Tips
We frequently get questions from customers about better placement of your website on major search engines or Search Engine Optimization such as AOL, Google, Yahoo and Bing. Admittedly we have very little control over how websites are ranked mainly because each search engine uses a slightly different algorithm. So if you rank as #1 on Yahoo but show up as #7 on Google, you may have to decide which search engine is most important to you so you can generate the appropriate algorithim to match.

In general, there are some safe tips you can use for all search engines giving you an overall search engine optimization. Here are just of few of our ideas:

1. Submit Your Website To Search Engines - Each site has a slightly different way of submitting your site for consideration in a search engine's directory. Each search engine will require you to set up an account however and install a piece of code used to verify or authenticate you site.
2. Verify Page Content - Carefully review pages of your website verifying that each page displays relative content to your company name, purpose of the page, product and service descriptions and geographical information such as your company's address. Relative content means if you are on the ABOUT US PAGE, you should display information about your company, it's goals and address/location. Make sure your company name is mentioned in the content.

3. Page Title, Page Description & Keywords - Using text on any page of your website, develop a keyword list, page title, description and site name that are directly relative to the subject discussed. Each page should have it's own Page Title, Description & Keywords. It is important not to use the exact same keywords on every page of the website.

4. Site Name - Your site description or name should reflect your company's name and a key phrase that best describes your products and services.

5. Alt Text or Title - Whenever possible, it is important to use ALT or Title text for pictures describing the picture and relative information to the page content.

6. Physical Page Name - Often search engines will identify a key phrase on a website based on a page name. If for example the name of the site is Crescent Homes, you may want to have a page called about_crescent_homes.html

7. Blogs, Social Networks and Forums - Become a member of a forum, social network or Blog and use your company's web address when making comments. Often search engines will index your site based on information the electronic robots find in these programs.

Example:

Physical Page Name: cokers_crossing.asp

Page Description: Crescent Homes at Coker's Crossing in Goose Creek are nestled in the disirable northwest area of Charleston. Homes from $130,000, A Great Place To Live

Keywords: new homes in Goose Creek,Crescent Homes,northwest Charleston homes,Coker's Crossing,energy efficient new homes,Highway 52 Charleston,red brick entrance way,two-story colonial style,new homes,ranch homes,charleston neighborhoods,neighborhood park,goose creek homes,goose creek property, www.cokerscrossing.net
